Although I've cooked beehoon and spaghetti for thirty people before (in a Girl Guide Camp), I really hate to cook. In my childhood, I dreaded being asked to wash rice and help pluck vegetables. I'm paying for it now.

One day, some guys popped into my kitchen and commented on the way I chopped garlic. "No wonder you can cut your fingers..." "Your knife like parang...swish swish!"

I resisted the urge to chase them out of the kitchen with my parang. My perfect manicure made matters worse. I just didn't have the look of a successful housewife.

That day, one of these guys taught me how to cook a potato dish. He left the kitchen for a brief while and I managed to add too much oyster sauce. I'm forever grateful for the lesson.
