Following many humbling experiences in the past week, I've been thinking about what true humility is. Humility is sometimes confused with abasement. I look at my life, and at others, and find that this confusion can destroy lives.

Some parents, my own as well, devalue their kids' abilities before others. We are seemingly uncomfortable with admitting good things in our lives, preferring instead to look at the negative. The result of an extreme case of negative conditioning in a child's growing years would be severely emotionally-handicapped adults, unstable and unable to cope in life. Tell me if you know people like this! Perhaps I'm that person you thought of...

Grovelling in the mud and crying, "I'm a worm, I'm a worm, I'm unworthy..." can't be that therapeutic, can it?

Over time, it leads one to deny dreams and bury potential. As a result, we grow up to become 'normal', or 'mediocre'. Just like everyone else. Mainstream. We think we're too stupid or too slow to learn a new skill or develop a talent. We do normal things, just like everyone, and seldom dwell very much on ideas or possibilities.

The thing is, probably deep inside, each and every victim of this false humility probably know that there's something wrong! Desperate to prove themselves, some people swing to the other extreme and become proud and arrogant. The attitude that declares: "The more people try to rub our noses in the mud, the more we're determined to stick it high in the air!"

So what's humility? And what's so great about it? I believe I've got it finally. But let me be humble about this revelation and let you discover it on your own.
