Should we get a car?

Contrary to the typical Singaporean mentality of acquiring cash, car and condo... (credit cards are too common to be mentioned in the same breath)... the more discerning Singaporeans are bucking the trend and switching to more affordable vans instead. Firstly, fuel consumption is lower, and secondly, instead of paying through your nose (at least $1K/mth) for a $48K + vehicle, a commercial van only costs around the range of $18K to $28K for something quite respectable. There's ample baby space too! In some cases, 8 people can squeeze into the back of a van, and it's great for ministry work.

No doubt $1K per month seems affordable for some, but what if education is going to cost around $100K/child in 20-30 years' time? One should really consider the opportunity cost of owning a car, especially if you're not hitting $6K/mth yet. Car or child?

So goes the theory of a sweet client of mine who drove down from Lim Chu Kang to pick me from church to work today.

I think his theory is really sound and tend to agree with him. But then, I don't think I'd want to own a vehicle in Singapore. I prefer taking a cab or mrt.

Stickman (forever lean, mean and green) says that diesel pollutes the environment more than petrol so he's not very keen. Hmm... *shrug* better return to my assignment again.
